PolarRES MPAS global simulations from 1985-2014 with an unrefined grid using ERA5 forcing data

MPAS-A global simulations w covering the period 1985-2014 with Sea Surface Temperatures and Sea Ice obtained from the 5th Generation of the ECMWF Reanalysis (ERA5). Simulations were performed with MPAS-A version 7.3 and are described in Graff et al. (2026) A multi-model inter-comparison study of variable-resolution global models with grid refinement over the Arctic and Antarctic, QJRMS. The MPAS model was run with 3 different grids: i) An unrefined experiment used a uniform 48-km resolution mesh (256002 horizontal grid cells). ii) Arctic refined experiments used a 46 km –12 km variable-resolution mesh (655362 horizontal grid cells) with the finest resolution (12 km) centered around the geographic North Pole extending equatorward to 60◦N. iii) Antarctic refined experiments used a 46 km –12 km variable-resolution mesh (655362 horizontal grid cells) with the finest resolution (12 km) centered around the geographic South Pole extending equatorward to 60◦S.
